El mercado de San Miguel abre temprano. A las siete, the vendors colocan las cajas de fruta y el olor a café llena la plaza. Marta compra pan, dos naranjas y a handful de aceitunas antes de ir al trabajo. Le gusta su barrio a esta hora, cuando las calles todavía están tranquilas y la panadería de la esquina huele a pan caliente. Camina despacio, saluda a la mujer de las flores y cruza la plaza hasta la parada del autobús. El sábado ha quedado con la familia de su novio para comer, y sabe que la comida durará toda la tarde. A ellos les encanta la sobremesa: el café, las historias y las risas que no terminan nunca. Todavía se pierde cuando todos hablan a la vez, pero cada semana entiende un poco más. Por la noche, cuando llama a casa, se da cuenta de que echa de menos a su madre. Aun así, poco a poco, Madrid empieza a parecerse a su hogar.

The San Miguel market opens early. At seven, the vendors set out the crates of fruit and the smell of coffee fills the square. Marta buys bread, two oranges and a handful of olives before going to work. She loves her neighbourhood at this hour, when the streets are still quiet and the bakery on the corner smells of warm bread. She walks slowly, says hello to the woman selling flowers and crosses the square to the bus stop. On Saturday she is meeting up with her boyfriend’s family for lunch, and she knows the meal will last all afternoon. They love lingering at the table long after the food is gone — the coffee, the stories and the laughter that never ends. She still loses the thread when everyone talks at once, but each week she understands a little more. At night, when she calls home, she realises how much she misses her mother. Even so, little by little, Madrid is starting to feel like home.
